Zania
Feminine · “hospitality”
Zania is a name with two possible parents that produced the same spelling, and the interesting part is that you cannot tell from the letters which one you have. It may be a respelling of Zenia, a real Greek-derived name with a documented word behind it; or it may be a member of the large American Za- family that produced Zaniyah, Zaria and Zaniah in the same years. Its American peak is 2006, which sits exactly in the middle of that family's run.
How old is the name Zania?

The story of Zania
Xenia was borne by a fifth-century saint venerated in the Eastern church and became a standard Russian name as Kseniya, later carried west as Xenia and Zenia by Russian emigration after 1917. That is one genuine ancestry available to this spelling. The other is domestic: from the late 1980s the letter Z became the most productive initial in African-American naming, and Za- combined freely with existing endings to produce Zaniyah, Zaria, Zaniah, Zamira and Zania. The two streams met in the 2000s, and American birth records show only the result. Which parent a particular family had in mind is a family fact, not a record.
Meaningscholars disagree
'hospitality, welcome to a stranger' if it descends from Xenia; otherwise not established
Greek xenia is a substantial word: the obligation of hospitality to a stranger, one of the organizing ideas of the Odyssey, from xenos, 'stranger, guest'. It gives the Russian name Kseniya and the English Xenia and Zenia. If Zania is that name respelled, the meaning comes with it. But the American Za- names of the 1990s and 2000s were largely built from sound, and Zaniyah in particular has no source at all. Both routes are plausible for the same six letters.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Zania went to 21 girls in 2025, but Zaniyah, Zaniya and Zaniah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 477, which makes it the 532nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,190 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,370 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 76,537 for Zania itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Janalyn test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zania's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Janalyn climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Janalyn's path sketches the road Zania is walking now.
Zania sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The Z initial is distinctive and immediately memorable.
- Zani, Zee and Nia give it three quite different short forms.
- The spelling is phonetic in English and easy to write.
- Two pronunciations circulate, and neither is more correct than the other.
- It is close to Zaniyah, Zaria and Zenia, all of which are in use, so confusion is common.
- The meaning depends entirely on which ancestry a family claims.
