The Roman grammarians' complaint about Z was that Latin did not need it: no native Latin word used the sound, so the letter sat idle. It was struck from the alphabet, and when Greek words began flooding in — zona, zephyrus, zodiacus — it had to be brought back, and was appended at the end of the row where it has stayed ever since. English inherited both the letter and its status as an outsider. It is the rarest initial in English dictionaries and among the rarest in surnames, and that scarcity is exactly what modern naming uses it for: a Z at the front of a name marks it as distinctive before anything else about it is read. The American data shows Z-initial girls' names rising as a group from the 1990s — Zaria, Zaniyah, Zoey, Zuri — which is a fashion in a single letter rather than in any particular name.
