Z is last in the alphabet because the Romans threw it out and then had to take it back. A censor removed it around 300 BC as useless to Latin; Greek loanwords made it necessary again a couple of centuries later, and rather than restore it to its old place they tacked it on the end, where it has stayed.

Where it comes from

The story of Zanya

The letter's history explains why so few old English names begin with it and so many new ones do. Latin barely needed z, Old English needed it even less, and English acquired most of its z-words from Greek, Arabic and later borrowings, so the letter arrived late and stayed exotic. American naming from the 1980s onward went looking for exactly that quality and z answered: Zoe, Zara, Zaria, Zaniyah, Zanya. The Albanian zana is worth knowing about even though it probably has nothing to do with this name. Those mountain spirits took their name from the Roman goddess Diana, carried into the Balkans by the empire and kept alive in folklore long after the empire went.

Not established

No source has been established for this spelling. Zana is a real name in Albanian, where the zana are the mountain spirits of folklore and the word descends from Latin Diana; Zanya has not been shown to come from it. It also sits close to Sanya, Zaniyah and Zaria, none of which is a demonstrated parent.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Zanya went to 8 girls in 2025, but Zaniyah, Zaniya and Zaniah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 477, which makes it the 532nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,385 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,370 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Zanya itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It opens with the rarest letter in English, which makes it memorable at no cost in difficulty.
  • Three short forms, one of which is a full name across eastern Europe.
  • Every sound in it is easy in English and Spanish alike.
What to consider
  • There is no documented meaning, which is worth settling on before a child asks.
  • Zaniya, Zania and Xanya are all in use, so the spelling will need giving.
  • The syllable count is genuinely unsettled between two and three.
