Where it comes from

The story of Zachari

Which route a biblical name took into English decides how it looks, and the routes split at the Reformation. Names that arrived earlier came through Greek and Latin, picking up Greek endings and Latin spellings on the way: Jacobus gave James, Iesous gave Jesus, Zacharias gave Zachary, Elias gave Elias and Elijah both. Names that arrived with the sixteenth and seventeenth-century translations came more directly from Hebrew and look it: Zechariah, Jeremiah, Obadiah, Hezekiah. The two layers sit side by side in English and are often taken for unrelated names. A useful test is the ending: a name ending -iah has come the Hebrew way, and one ending -ias or -y has come through Greek. Zachari, with neither, is a third and modern thing.

Meaning

Hebrew zekharyah, Yah has remembered

From Hebrew zakhar, he remembered, and yah, the divine name: Yah has remembered. The name belongs to a minor prophet, to the father of John the Baptist, and to several other biblical figures. Zachary descends through the Greek and Latin Zacharias; Zechariah is a direct transliteration of the Hebrew. Zachari is a modern American spelling that drops the final consonant of Zachary and leaves the -i ending bare. It peaks in 1985.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Zachari went to 9 boys in 2025, but Zachary is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 1,655, which makes it the 218th most-given boys’ name of the year — 8,025 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,032 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 189,786 for Zachari itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
