The story of Yanni
Giannis and Yannis are among the commonest Greek men's names, and the diminutive Yanni is what a Greek family actually calls the child. Yanni Chryssomallis, born in Kalamata in 1954, moved to Minnesota, taught himself keyboards, and in 1993 played a concert at the Herodes Atticus theater below the Acropolis that was broadcast worldwide and sold enormously. American birth records for Yanni rise sharply after that and peak in 1998. It is a clean single-bearer effect on a name that had been available in Greek-American families for a century without ever reaching the wider country.
Meaning
God is gracious
From Greek Ioannis, from Hebrew Yôḥānān, God is gracious. The reading is settled and shared with John, Juan, Sean, Ivan and Jean. Yanni is the familiar form of Giannis, which is itself the everyday Greek form of Ioannis; the initial gamma is a soft y sound in modern Greek, which is why the English spelling begins with a Y.

The Keevin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yanni's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Keevin climbed just as high around 1957, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Keevin's path sketches the road Yanni is walking now.
Yanni sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
