The story of Keevin
In Irish, Caoimhín is said roughly KEE-veen, with a long ee in the first syllable that English Kevin shortened; Keevin, by accident or design, writes that older vowel back in. Kevin Barry, an eighteen-year-old medical student in Dublin, was captured after an ambush in 1920 and hanged by the British, and the ballad 'Kevin Barry' was sung across Ireland and among the Irish abroad. Keevin is a spelling used by American families in the second half of the twentieth century.
