The story of Vivia
The Passion of Perpetua and Felicity survives in Latin and Greek and contains a long section presented as Perpetua's own account: her arrest, her father's pleading, her infant son, and her dreams in prison. Whether every word is hers is argued, but the text is treated by historians as one of the very few first-person voices of a woman from the Roman world. Vibia was her family name. The modern Vivia is a different matter, arriving in nineteenth-century America as a short or elaborated form of Vivian, and its best year in United States records is 1887, at the very start of registration.

alive, living
The Roman gens name Vibius, feminine Vibia, is of uncertain origin and may be Oscan rather than Latin. The related Vivianus, from Latin vivus, alive, is the source of Vivian and Vivien and has a clear meaning. Vivia in modern use is usually treated as a short form of Vivian and takes that reading, though the Roman name it resembles is a separate word.
