The story of Vinay
The Pali canon has three divisions, the Tipitaka or three baskets: the Sutta, the discourses; the Abhidhamma, the analytical treatises; and the Vinaya, the rule. The Vinaya is not a set of principles but a body of case law, with each regulation attached to the incident that prompted it, so the text reads as a record of everything that went wrong in an early monastic community and what was decided about it. There are rules about the length of a robe, the acceptance of gold, the manner of eating, the settling of quarrels, and the procedure for expelling a member. Its ordinary Sanskrit sense, discipline or the modest conduct that follows from training, is what makes it usable as a personal name, and Indian families using it are not naming a child after a rulebook.

The Kenard test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Vinay's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kenard climbed just as high around 1964, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kenard's path sketches the road Vinay is walking now.
