Where it comes from

Our story of Kenard

To ken is to know, and in Scotland and the far north of England it is an ordinary everyday verb, used exactly as know is used further south. Standard English dropped it centuries ago except in the phrase beyond my ken, where it survives as a noun meaning the range of what one knows or can see. It is the same word as the German kennen and it is related to can, to cunning and to uncouth, which originally meant unknown. A great many English words of this kind are still fully alive a few hundred miles north of where they died, which is a reminder that standard English is one dialect that got lucky rather than the language itself.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Kennard is generally traced to a Germanic compound, and the second element is the common one meaning hardy. The front is argued over and this spelling is not documented directly.

Fashion outlook

Kenard sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ken comes off the front as a short form and needs no explaining anywhere.
  • It is read correctly at first sight and rarely needs spelling twice.
  • It is rare on paper while being made of familiar pieces.
What to consider
  • Kennard is the commoner spelling, so this one will be corrected to it regularly.
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • No origin is documented for this form, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
