Our story of Tyshaun
American prefix inventories are small and almost entirely abstract: La-, De-, Ja-, Ke-, Sha-, Ty-, Za-. Most are syllables with no source at all, which is why they combine so freely. Ty- is the exception, and its history is traceable. Tyrone entered American use as a first name in the nineteenth century, was carried further by Tyrone Power in the 1930s and 1940s, and by the 1970s the first syllable had been detached and was being used to build new names: Tyshaun, Tyquan, Tyrell, Tyree, Tyjuan. The detachment is the interesting part. A prefix cannot be borrowed until the name it comes from is common enough that its opening syllable is recognizable on its own, which is why every productive prefix in the system traces back to a name that was once in the top few hundred. The inventory is small because the qualifying names were few.
