Tyris
Masculine
American coinage has a small stock of endings and -is is not usually one of them. It comes from a different layer of the name stock altogether, the Latin and Greek surnames that gave Travis, Curtis, Otis, Willis and Ellis, and borrowing it puts a coined name in unexpected company.

Our story of Tyris
Our reading is that the endings available to American coinage are a closed and observable set, and that watching an unusual one get used is informative. The common endings are -on, -an, -en, -ell, -quan, -shawn and, for girls, -a, -ia, -iyah and -lyn. Each entered the stock from somewhere identifiable and each is now free of its source. The -is ending is rarer, and its source is the surname layer: a group of names ending in a Latin or French sibilant that English absorbed as family names and then began using as first names in the nineteenth century. Travis, Curtis and Otis were all substantial American boys' names by the 1950s. Once they were, the ending was available, and Tyris, Demetris and Jarvis follow. The pattern is exactly the same as with -lee and -son; only the source layer is different.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Tyris is an American formation joining the Ty- prefix, harvested from Tyrone and Tyler, to an -is ending. That ending reaches English through surnames of varied origin: Travis from Old French traverse, a toll crossing; Curtis from Old French curteis, courteous; Otis from a Germanic personal name. None of those meanings attaches here. It peaks in 1972.

The Arsen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tyris's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Arsen climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Arsen's path sketches the road Tyris is walking now.
Tyris sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
