The story of Tyreke
Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed from North Africa in 711 with a Berber and Arab force, landed at the rock that has carried his name ever since, and defeated the Visigothic king Roderic within months. Within seven years most of the peninsula was under Muslim rule, and it stayed so in part until 1492. Jabal Tariq became Gibraltar in Spanish and then in English, so a mountain, a strait, a British territory and a common English word for a bottleneck all descend from one commander's given name. The name itself is ordinary Arabic: the root t-r-q means to knock or strike, a tariq is one who comes by night and knocks at the door, and the Quran uses it for a bright star that pierces the darkness. Whether an American bearer is connected to any of this is another question, and one the record does not answer.

Arabic tariq, one who knocks
Tyreke is most likely an American respelling of Tariq or Tarik, Arabic for one who knocks or arrives by night, and by extension the morning star, which the Quran names in the sura al-Tariq. It may equally be a coinage built on the Ty- prefix and an -eke ending. The record cannot distinguish them. The peak is 1999.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tyreke's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hiroshi climbed just as high around 1924, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hiroshi's path sketches the road Tyreke is walking now.
