Where it comes from

The story of Tyana

Apollonius of Tyana was a first-century wandering philosopher and miracle-worker whose biography was written to rival the gospels, which is why an obscure Cappadocian city has a name still in print. The American Tyana has nothing to do with any of that: it belongs to the Ty- family that ran through United States naming from the 1970s to the 1990s, producing Tyanna, Tyesha, Tyra and Tyrell, and it reached its best year in 1999. Collisions like this are more common than they look, because the stock of easy syllables is small and the world's place names are many; what makes this one notable is how exact it is.

Not established

The Anatolian place name is ancient and its own sense is unrecovered; it comes to Greek through Hittite Tuwanuwa. The modern American name is built from the free syllable Ty, which shortens Tyler and Tyrone and is otherwise meaningless, plus the -ana ending shared with Diana, Ariana and Briana. The two are homographs, not relatives, and no modern bearer descends from the city.

Tyana sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1999, with 144 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tyana went to 18 girls in 2025, but Tiana, Tianna and Tyanna and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 661, which makes it the 428th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,897 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,432 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 89,293 for Tyana itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two ready short forms, Ty and Ana, in completely different registers.
  • Fits the Diana and Ariana rhythm, so it never sounds unfamiliar.
  • Rare in the United States while being easy to say and to spell.
What to consider
  • Two pronunciations circulate, tee-AH-nuh and TY-an-uh.
  • Tiana, Tyanna and Tianna are all near neighbors in the records.
  • The ancient city is a coincidence, not an origin, and should not be claimed as one.
