Those adjectives became names in their own right and English inherited a large number of them, which is why so many modern women's names end the same way. What has changed is the front. The ending now attaches to a syllable chosen for its sound rather than to a family or a place, so the grammar survives without anything left to govern. The y in this spelling is doing a real job: English collapses ia into a single syllable, as it does in Tia, and the y stops it.
