The story of Teagen
Tadhg was one of the most common Irish male names of the middle ages, and its English spelling, Teague, entered English as a generic and hostile label for an Irishman, used freely in pamphlets and songs from the seventeenth century onward. That usage is part of why the name itself became rare in English-speaking settings for a long stretch, and why the modern revival comes through the surname forms rather than through Tadhg directly. The spelling is also a case of Irish orthography defeating English readers: the dh in Tadhg is silent and the name is said close to tyge, which is nothing a reader of English would guess. Teagan, Teagen and Tegan bypass the problem entirely by taking the surname, which had already been anglicized for them.

Irish tadhg, poet
Teagan is usually derived from the Irish surname O Tadhgain, from tadhg, a poet or philosopher, though a separate derivation from Aodhagan, a diminutive of Aodh, is also proposed. The Teagen spelling is a modern American variant. This spelling's male peak is 2006; the female forms of the name are more common in America.

The Kean test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Teagen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kean climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kean's path sketches the road Teagen is walking now.
