Tadhg means poet, and it was so common in Ireland that it became a word for anybody. Tadhg an mhargaidh, Tadhg of the marketplace, is the Irish equivalent of the man in the street, and using a personal name that way only works if nearly every second man is called it.

The story of Teagen
Tadhg's ubiquity gave it two afterlives. In Irish it became a generic term for an ordinary man, in the phrase Tadhg an mhargaidh, and it is still used that way. In English it became Teague, and by the seventeenth century that was a contemptuous term for an Irishman, in the way Paddy later was. So the same name is a neutral everyman inside the language and an insult outside it, depending entirely on who is doing the naming. The word behind it names a poet, which reflects the standing of the file, the professional poet, in Gaelic society: poets were trained for years, held hereditary positions, and their satire was believed capable of real harm. A society that used the word for poet as one of its commonest names was making a claim about what it valued.

The Ladena test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Teagen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ladena climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ladena's path sketches the road Teagen is walking now.
