The story of Tatyana
Tatiana was carried into the Eastern church by a third-century Roman martyr and became a major Russian name; her January feast is also Russian Students' Day, because a university was founded on it. Pushkin's novel in verse gave the name its defining bearer in 1833. English-speaking countries borrowed both the long form and the short Tanya, and Tatyana — the transliteration with a y — peaked in American records in the early 1990s.

From the Roman family name Tatius, borne by a Sabine king in the legendary history of early Rome. The Sabine language is barely recorded, so the name's meaning is not recoverable — what survives is the family, not the sense.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tatyana went to 18 girls in 2025, but Tatiana and Tatianna are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 256, which makes it the 707th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,618 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 6,278 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 89,293 for Tatyana itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Mavis test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tatyana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Mavis climbed just as high around 1924, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Mavis's path sketches the road Tatyana is walking now.
Tatyana sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented martyr, a national feast day and one of the great heroines of European literature.
- It is used across Russian, Italian, Spanish and Greek without adjustment.
- Tanya is a ready-made short form with a life of its own.
- Tatiana is the commoner transliteration and will often be assumed.
- The meaning is genuinely unrecovered, which matters if meaning is the point.
