Tatiana
Feminine
Tatiana is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 35,234 girls against 35 boys since 1880.
Four syllables that open wide in the middle — tah-tee-AH-nah — and a spelling that needs no translation from Rome to Moscow to Madrid. It reached English-speaking families largely through Russia, where Pushkin gave the name to the heroine of his novel in verse and where January 25, St Tatiana's Day, is still marked as students' day. Familiar in three or four languages at once, and rarely duplicated in one classroom.

Where it comes from
From Tatius to Tatiana
The story of Tatiana
The name begins as Roman family property: Tatius, borne in Rome's founding legends by the Sabine king Titus Tatius, gave rise to Tatianus, and Tatianus gave a feminine Tatiana. A Christian martyr of that name, venerated in Rome, carried it into the church calendars, and it was through Orthodox Christianity that it took deepest root — Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian and Greek families used it for centuries. Pushkin's Tatyana Larina, in the 1830s, fixed it in Russian literature as a name of quiet seriousness. It reached the United States with Eastern European immigration and later spread through Spanish-speaking families, which is why it is best represented today in California, Texas and Florida.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Tatiana is the feminine form of the Roman family name Tatianus, itself from Tatius — a name of Sabine rather than Latin stock, whose meaning was already lost by the time Roman writers were using it. So the meaning is genuinely not established. What is documented is the line: a Roman clan name that became a personal name, then a saint's name, then a name carried across Europe.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tatiana went to 216 girls in 2025, but Tatianna and Tatyana are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 256, which makes it the 707th most-given girls’ name of the year — 397 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 6,278 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 7,441 for Tatiana itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jayne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tatiana's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jayne climbed just as high around 1956, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jayne's path sketches the road Tatiana is walking now.
Tatiana sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Comes with Tanya and Tania already built in — short forms with centuries of use, both of which also stand alone as given names.
- Spelled identically in English, Spanish, Italian, Romanian and Portuguese, so it crosses languages without adjustment.
- A documented line running from Roman family names through the church calendars to modern Europe — very few names have that continuity.
- Widely recognized without being repeated: full name and nickname are both familiar sounds.
- The pronunciation is not fixed in American English. Some will say tah-tee-AH-nah, others ta-tee-ANN-a, and the Russian stress differs again. Nothing wrong with any of them, but corrections will be part of life.
- Competing spellings — Tatyana, Tatianna, Tatijana — mean people will often ask which one, and forms may come back wrong.
- Occasionally confused with Titania, the fairy queen of A Midsummer Night's Dream, which is a separate name entirely.
- Tanya arrives quickly whether invited or not; if you want the full four syllables used, it helps to model that from the start.
