Sia
Feminine · “No single meaning”
Sia is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 2,790 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Three letters, two soft syllables, and at least three separate histories arriving at the same spelling — Greek families shortening Anastasia, Mende and Kono families in Sierra Leone naming a first-born daughter, Indian families writing Siya. It has been on US records since the late 1960s, quietly, and its real wave here is recent enough that most of the Sias in the country are still children.

The story of Sia
Sia is what happens when a sound is so simple that several traditions find it separately. Greek speakers have clipped Anastasia and Athanasia down to Sia for generations, the way English clips Elizabeth to Beth. In West Africa it stands on its own: a Mende and Kono name for the eldest daughter, in steady use long before it appeared in American records. A third road runs through South Asia, where Sia and Siya belong to Sita, the central woman of the Ramayana. In the United States the name showed up first in the late 1960s and stayed thin on the ground for decades before the current, still-young wave.

No single meaning — several unrelated names have converged on this spelling
In Greek, Sia is a long-standing short form of Anastasia and Athanasia, names built on the ideas of resurrection and of not dying. Among the Mende and Kono of Sierra Leone and Liberia, Sia is a woman's name given to a first-born daughter. In India, Sia and Siya are forms of Sita, the name of the heroine of the Ramayana. None of these borrowed from the others; the spelling is simply short enough that many languages reached it independently.

Pronouncing Sia
SEE-uh
Two syllables, stress on the first. Greek and South Asian speakers often give the ending a fuller vowel, closer to SEE-ah. A first-meeting mishearing as Mia or Tia is common enough that spelling it out once tends to settle things.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Holley test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Holley climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Holley's path sketches the road Sia is walking now.
Sia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Three letters, spelled the way it sounds — no dictation problems, no alternate spellings competing for attention.
- At home in Greek, West African and South Asian families alike, which few names this short can claim.
- Already the short form of itself: nothing to shorten, nothing a teacher or coach can trim against your wishes.
- Rhymes into a family of sounds Americans already know well — Mia, Zia, Sofia — so it reads as familiar on first hearing.
- The name is strongly attached, right now, to one Australian singer who performs under it alone. That association is currently the first thing many adults will mention, and it may feel dated later or may simply fade.
- Very short names sit awkwardly with very short surnames; say the full name aloud a few times before deciding.
- It is close enough to Mia, Tia and Sierra that it will occasionally be misheard, especially over the phone. Spelling it out once usually ends the matter.
- A child with this name will most likely be the only one in her school — welcome to some families, less so to a child who would rather blend in.
