Lianna
Feminine
Lianna is the English double-n dressing of Liana, a name that has long done duty in Italian, Romanian and Armenian as the warm, clipped end of longer names like Giuliana and Liliana. It is also, in French and in botany, the word for a climbing vine of the tropical forest — the two threads have run alongside each other for a couple of centuries. On American records it has held a quiet, unbroken place for generations without ever crowding a classroom.

The story of Lianna
The form parents meet most often across Europe is Liana, recorded in Italian and Romanian use as an affectionate shortening of Giuliana, Liliana and Eliana — the kind of name that begins as a household abbreviation and then stands on its own. It traveled east as well: Liana is well established in Armenian and Russian naming, written Лиана. Lianna, with the doubled n, is the spelling that took root in English-speaking countries, where the extra consonant nudges readers toward the stress pattern of Anna and Joanna. American records show it arriving in the mid-twentieth century wave of -anna names and holding steady ever since, never surging, never disappearing.

Either 'vine' or the tail end of Juliana / Liliana — the readings compete
Two serious explanations. The first treats Lianna as a shortened form of names ending in -liana (Giuliana, Liliana, Eliana), in which case the meaning belongs to the parent name — Julia's family, or the lily, or 'my God has answered'. The second reads it as the French liane, 'climbing vine', a word that entered European naming as Liana. There is also a Hebrew reading of Liana built from li ('to me') and a form of Anna ('grace'). None of the three has displaced the others.

Pronouncing Lianna
lee-AH-nuh
Two pronunciations are in real use: lee-AH-nuh, closer to the Italian and Romanian original, and lee-ANN-uh, which the doubled n encourages in English. Both are correct; it helps to pick one early and repeat it, because people will guess.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lianna went to 216 girls in 2025, but Liana, Lyanna and Liyana and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 8 spellings went to 1,675, which makes it the 197th most-given girls’ name of the year — 907 places above the chart.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Dorian test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lianna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dorian climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dorian's path sketches the road Lianna is walking now.
Lianna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Carries two ready-made short forms, Lia and Ana, that both work as standalone names — useful room to move as a child grows.
- The same name is at home in Italian, Romanian, Russian and Armenian, so relatives in several languages will recognize it on sight.
- Every letter is a common English letter and the syllables are transparent; nobody has to be taught how to read it.
- Has held a continuous, level place on US records across decades rather than spiking with a single fashion.
- The spelling competes with Liana, Lianne, Leanna and Lyanna. Expect to spell it aloud fairly often, and expect the single-n version on the occasional form and gift tag.
- Stress is genuinely unsettled between lee-AH-nuh and lee-ANN-uh. Neither is wrong, but she will correct people from time to time.
- It is rare enough that she will likely be the only Lianna anyone in her class knows — pleasant most days, and it does mean the name gets remarked on rather than passing unnoticed.
