Marian was a shepherdess before she was an outlaw's companion. Our story of Marian
The merger is visible in the records. The outlaw appears in ballads and complaints for a couple of centuries with no woman attached to him at all; the shepherdess appears in a French play and then in English May games, always with a shepherd; and then, in the sixteenth century, the May games and the Robin Hood games are being staged together in the same parishes, with the same players, and she turns up in Sherwood. Nobody decided this. It is what happens when two popular entertainments are performed on the same afternoon by the same amateur company for a hundred years, and it means the most famous version of the story is the one where the pieces had already been shuffled.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Marian went to 217 girls in 2025, but Maryann, Maryan and Mariann are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 358, which makes it the 624th most-given girls’ name of the year — 478 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 4,490 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 7,407 for Marian itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Leona test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leona climbed just as high around 1904, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leona's path sketches the road Marian is walking now.
Marian is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.
