The story of Mariann
Anne is, by a tradition older than the Gospels are, the name of Mary's mother — it comes from a second-century text rather than from the canonical accounts, but the church kept it and the compound Marie-Anne therefore joins a daughter to her mother. In France the pairing became so common that it stopped sounding like two names, and when the Revolution needed a female figure for the Republic it took the plainest name available. Marianne has been the face of France ever since. American families arrived at the same compound from a different direction, through the Southern and Midwestern habit of double first names said as one, and wrote it closed up with a single n.

grace, joined to a name nobody has explained
A compound of Marie and Anne. Anne is Hebrew Hannah, grace or favor, and that half is settled. Marie is Maria, whose meaning has never been established despite two thousand years of proposals. So half the name is clear and half is not, which is honest to say and unusual to admit.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Line the two peaks up, and Shirlene's path sketches the road Mariann is walking now.
