Maryan has two entirely separate lives in the American record. In 1909, when it peaks, it is Mary Ann run together — a compound of the two most-used women's names in the English-speaking world. In recent decades it is far more likely to be the Somali form of Maryam, which is a different name reaching the same six letters.

Where it comes from

Our story of Maryan

It is worth following the circle. Miryam is the sister of Moses; Greek makes it Mariam and Maria; Latin keeps Maria; English produces Mary and, joined to Ann, the compound Maryann. Meanwhile Arabic takes the same Hebrew name as Maryam, the Quran uses it for the mother of Jesus, and Somali — which received Islam early and adapted Arabic names to its own sound patterns — produces Maryan. Three thousand years and two religions later, an American birth record from 1909 and one from 2015 can carry the same six letters arrived at from opposite directions, both descending from one woman in the Book of Exodus. Very few names can demonstrate that, and this one does it without any of the intermediate steps being in doubt.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The compound reading joins Mary, from Hebrew Miryam, to Ann, from Hebrew Hannah — one unresolved meaning and one settled one, 'grace'. The Somali reading is Maryan, the standard Somali form of Maryam, which is the Arabic and Quranic form of the same Miryam that gives Mary. So both routes lead back to Miryam, whose own meaning has never been established: 'bitter', 'beloved' and an Egyptian derivation are all proposed.

Maryan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2010, with 35 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Maryan went to 19 girls in 2025, but Marian, Maryann and Mariann are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 358, which makes it the 624th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,492 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 4,490 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 84,593 for Maryan itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both readings descend from the same very ancient name, which gives it real depth.
  • Mary and Ann are both available on the English route as complete names.
  • The spelling is short and needs no accents.
What to consider
  • Two quite different pronunciations circulate depending on the tradition.
  • Maryan, Maryann and Maryam all exist and are easily confused.
  • The underlying Hebrew name's meaning has never been established.
