Marian was a shepherdess before she was an outlaw's companion. The character belongs originally to French pastoral plays and to the English May games, where she was paired with a shepherd; the games and the Robin Hood plays were performed at the same festivals, and after a century or so of sharing a stage the two casts merged.

Our story of Marian
The merger is visible in the records. The outlaw appears in ballads and complaints for a couple of centuries with no woman attached to him at all; the shepherdess appears in a French play and then in English May games, always with a shepherd; and then, in the sixteenth century, the May games and the Robin Hood games are being staged together in the same parishes, with the same players, and she turns up in Sherwood. Nobody decided this. It is what happens when two popular entertainments are performed on the same afternoon by the same amateur company for a hundred years, and it means the most famous version of the story is the one where the pieces had already been shuffled.

Fashion outlook
Marian sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
