Xochitl
Feminine · “flower”
Xochitl is a word from Classical Nahuatl, the language of the Mexica, and it has meant one thing steadily for more than five hundred years: flower. It survives in place names anyone who has been to Mexico City has seen — Xochimilco, the floating gardens — and it survived the arrival of Spanish, which is more than many Nahuatl words managed. In the mouth it is soft and quick, three syllables collapsing into two, ending on a sound English does not quite have.
How old is the name Xochitl?

The story of Xochitl
The word xōchitl belonged to Classical Nahuatl, spoken across central Mexico before and after the Spanish conquest, where it named both the flower itself and the twentieth day-sign of the Mexica calendar. Spanish speakers wrote it down as Xóchitl, keeping the strange-looking X and adding an accent, and it passed into ordinary Mexican naming — carried along in the twentieth century by a broad revaluing of Indigenous language and history. From there it traveled north with Mexican families, which is why it is most at home today in California, Texas and Illinois. In US records the accent usually falls away, leaving Xochitl.

The Madysen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Xochitl's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Madysen climbed just as high around 2002, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Madysen's path sketches the road Xochitl is walking now.
Xochitl is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- A meaning that is settled and needs one word to explain: flower.
- Continuous documented use of the word for over five centuries, with a real short form, Xochi, already in circulation.
- Instantly recognized and correctly pronounced in Mexican-American communities, which is where most bearers live.
- Currently on the rise in US records rather than fading — familiar in some regions, still uncommon nationally.
- Outside Spanish-speaking circles the spelling will need explaining often. The X reads as ks to most English speakers, and the tl ending has no English equivalent, so mispronunciations will be routine rather than occasional.
- You will have to decide about the accent: Xóchitl is the standard Mexican spelling, Xochitl the usual US one. Both are correct, but forms, keyboards and databases will keep raising the question.
- It is rare enough nationally that a child will very likely be the only one in her school — no shared name, but also no established habit of getting it right for her.
