Where it comes from

The story of Madysen

The film was released in 1984 and the line was written as a joke, on the assumption that the audience would find the idea absurd. Registrars did not. The name went from almost unused to the top of the American charts inside fifteen years, one of the fastest and best-documented rises on record, and every respelling followed: Madisyn, Maddisen, Madysen, Madycin. Underneath is a plain English surname with a genuinely odd derivation. Patronymic surnames almost always name a father; this one names a mother, which happened when a woman was the more notable parent or the father was unknown, and Maud was common enough to produce several such names.

Meaningscholars disagree

son of Maud

An English surname, usually read as a patronymic from Maud, the medieval English form of Matilda — so it means son of a woman, which is unusual and is why it is worth stating plainly. A derivation from Matthew has also been proposed. Neither is settled.

Madysen sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2002, with 193 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Madysen went to 7 girls in 2025, but Madisen is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 19, which makes it the 941st most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,991 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 84,593 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Madysen itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three syllables with a firm opening stress that carries well.
  • Maddie works immediately and needs no explanation.
  • The origin is documented down to a specific film and year, which few names can offer.
What to consider
  • Madison is far commoner and at least four respellings compete, so it will be spelled out constantly.
  • It was one of the most given names in the country for two decades, which places the bearer in time.
  • The few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper, which reverses the surname's history.
