Where it comes from

The story of Erika

Erika Mann, daughter of the novelist Thomas Mann, was an actress and cabaret writer who mocked the Nazis on stage; when they stripped her of her citizenship, the poet W.H. Auden, whom she had barely met, married her so that she could have a British passport. In Germany the name has another life: Erika Mustermann is the sample woman printed on specimen identity cards and forms, the German equivalent of Jane Doe. The name is recorded for a very few boys, but it is a woman's name everywhere.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Erika went to 213 girls in 2025, but Erica, Ericka and Erykah are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 441, which makes it the 558th most-given girls’ name of the year — 551 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,645 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 7,546 for Erika itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
