Erykah
Feminine · “ever-ruler”
This spelling entered American records in a single year, and the reason is not in doubt: a first album arrived in 1997 and the name arrived with it. Underneath is Erica, the feminine of Eric, which is Old Norse and means something close to eternal ruler — and which is also, by pure coincidence, the botanical name for heather.

From Eiríkr to Erykah
The story of Erykah
Eric came to England with the Danes and to America with the Scandinavians, and the feminine Erica was built in the eighteenth century. It was very widely given in the middle of the twentieth. The y-and-k-and-h spelling belongs entirely to the later 1990s: a singer released a debut record under it, and the record shows the name entering the charts and peaking in the same year, which is about as clean a case of a single cause as the American data ever produces. Names that arrive that way keep their moment attached to them.
Meaning
ever-ruler
From the Old Norse Eiríkr, joining a word meaning ever or always to one meaning ruler — so the one who rules forever, or possibly the sole ruler. Separately and unrelatedly, Erica is the Latin genus name for heather, taken from the Greek ereike. The two words have nothing to do with each other and the coincidence is complete.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Erykah went to 6 girls in 2025, but Erika, Erica and Ericka are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 441, which makes it the 558th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,650 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,645 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Erykah itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Andra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Erykah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Andra climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Andra's path sketches the road Erykah is walking now.
Erykah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The sound is entirely familiar, so nothing has to be explained aloud.
- The Norse name behind it has a documented thousand-year history.
- Three short forms are available and they sound nothing alike.
- The heather coincidence is a genuinely pleasant thing to be able to mention.
- Erica and Erika are the standard spellings and will be written instead constantly.
- The spelling is tied very closely to one artist and one year, which dates it precisely.
- Three changed letters means dictating the name letter by letter, permanently.
