Where it comes from

The story of Tatianna

Saint Tatiana, a Roman deacon's daughter martyred in the third century, is venerated particularly in the Orthodox church, and her feast on 25 January is Russian Students' Day because Moscow University was founded on it in 1755. That made Tatiana one of the standard Russian women's names, and Tatyana Larina in Pushkin's Eugene Onegin fixed it in Russian literature. American use rose through the 1980s and 1990s from several directions at once — Russian, Hispanic and African American families all used it — and the respellings followed. Tatianna peaks in 1999.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Tatianus is a derivative of the Roman gens name Tatius, borne by Titus Tatius, the legendary Sabine king who ruled Rome jointly with Romulus. The name's own meaning is not recoverable; it is generally taken to be Sabine or Etruscan rather than Latin. No reliable derivation exists, and the glosses offered in name books are inventions.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tatianna went to 22 girls in 2025, but Tatiana and Tatyana are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 256, which makes it the 707th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,847 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 6,278 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 73,058 for Tatianna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Tati and Tanya are both warm, established short forms.
  • It has a genuine Roman, Christian and Russian history.
  • The vowels are open throughout.
What to consider
  • The meaning is genuinely unrecoverable, whatever name books say.
  • Tatiana, Tatianna, Tatyana and Tatianna are four spellings of one name.
  • Four syllables is long for American paperwork.
