The story of Warren
The Norman family of Warenne held enormous English estates after the Conquest, and the surname spread from them and from the occupational word. It became an American given name in the nineteenth-century surname wave, and Joseph Warren, killed at Bunker Hill in 1775, gave it patriotic weight. Warren G. Harding was elected president in 1920 and died in office in 1923, and the American birth records for Warren rise sharply in those years for boys and, in much smaller numbers, for girls — the female peak in 1929 sits just after. The girls' use faded quickly; the boys' lasted another forty years.

Two derivations feed the surname. One is Old French warenne, a game park or rabbit enclosure, from which the English word warren comes. The other is the Norman place name La Varenne, and a Germanic personal name Warin, from a root meaning to guard, lies behind that.
