The story of Audie
Æthelthryth of Ely, better known as Etheldreda or Audrey, founded the abbey at Ely and died in 679; her fair was a major medieval market. The name survived in English use as Audrey and generated the familiar forms Audie and Audy. American records show Audie for girls from the late nineteenth century, peaking in 1905, in the same period that treated diminutives as full names. The name's most famous American bearer is a man: Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier of the Second World War and later a film actor, born in Texas in 1925.
Meaning
Noble strength
From Old English Æthelthryth, from æthel, noble, and thryth, strength — the name of a seventh-century abbess of Ely. Middle English wore it down to Audrey. The reading is settled. Cheap lace sold at her fair was called St Audrey's lace, which contracted to tawdry, so the same name gave English both a girls' name and an adjective for shoddy finery.
