Where it comes from

Our story of Antoinetta

The queen this name is attached to is supposed to have said, on being told the people had no bread, that they should eat cake. She did not. The line appears in Rousseau's Confessions, attributed to an unnamed great princess, and Rousseau wrote that passage when the future queen was a small child in Vienna and had not yet set foot in France. The story was in circulation before her, was told about other royal women before her, and was pinned on her later by people with reasons of their own. It is one of the clearest examples of how a quotation attaches itself: not because anyone can show it was said, but because it fits what an audience already believes. The name has carried the sentence ever since, and the sentence belongs to a book.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Roman family name behind this whole group has never been explained; ancient attempts to connect it to a Greek word are folk etymology. The French diminutive ending and the Italian final a are both real morphology, but they are attached to a base whose meaning is genuinely lost.

Fashion outlook

Antoinetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It offers three quite different short forms, each of which stands alone.
  • The rhythm is long and formal, which gives a bearer a choice of registers.
  • It is recognizable in French, Italian and Spanish without being rebuilt.
What to consider
  • Antonietta is the actual Italian form and will be written instead of this.
  • The royal association is permanent and comes with a sentence she never spoke.
  • Four syllables is long for a form, and the oi will be mispronounced by readers who have not met it.
