Tarell
Masculine · “Old French tirel”
Walter Tirel shot William Rufus in the New Forest in August 1100 and rode straight for the coast. Whether it was an accident has been argued for nine hundred years, not least because the king's younger brother was in the same forest and on the throne within three days.

The story of Tarell
William II, called Rufus, was hunting in the New Forest on 2 August 1100 when an arrow loosed by Walter Tirel struck him in the chest and killed him. The body was left where it fell and carried to Winchester by a charcoal burner. Tirel fled to France and never returned, though he later swore to the chronicler Abbot Suger that he had not even been in that part of the forest. Rufus's younger brother Henry was in the hunting party, rode immediately to Winchester to seize the treasury, and was crowned in London three days later, ahead of their elder brother Robert, who was on his way home from the Crusade. Medieval chroniclers recorded it as an accident and modern historians remain divided, which is roughly where the matter has stood since 1100.
