Where it comes from

The story of Jenny

On 23 July 1637, when the dean of St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh began reading from the new prayer book King Charles I had imposed on Scotland, a market-woman remembered as Jenny Geddes is said to have hurled her folding stool at his head; the riot that followed helped set off the wars that ended Charles's reign. In 1838 Leigh Hunt, recovering from illness, called on Thomas and Jane Carlyle, and Jane jumped from her chair to kiss him; he wrote 'Jenny kiss'd me when we met', one of the best-loved short poems in English. Jenny has been an American name since records began.
