Henry Morton Stanley was born John Rowlands in a Welsh workhouse. He took the name of a New Orleans merchant, invented a great deal of the rest, and found Livingstone at Ujiji in 1871 with a greeting he may well have made up afterwards.

The story of Stan
John Rowlands was born in Denbigh in 1841, illegitimate, and spent his childhood in the St Asaph workhouse. He sailed for New Orleans at eighteen, took the name of a merchant there whom he later claimed had adopted him, fought on both sides in the American Civil War, and became a newspaper correspondent. The New York Herald sent him to find David Livingstone, who was not lost, and he reached Ujiji on Lake Tanganyika in November 1871. The greeting, Dr Livingstone, I presume, appears in his own account and in no independent source, and the relevant pages of his diary are missing. His later work in the Congo for Leopold II is the part of his career that has aged worst. The name Stanley spread enormously in the 1870s on the strength of the expedition.

Stan is a short form of Stanley, an English place name from stan, a stone, and leah, a clearing, and also of Slavic Stanislaus, from stan, to become or establish, and slav, glory. The two are unrelated and the American record does not distinguish them. The peak is 1959.
