The story of Shelby
Norse settlers left a thick layer of place-names across northern and eastern England, and a willow farm was worth naming — willow was used for baskets, hurdles and charcoal, and grew where nothing else would. Families from Selby carried the name away as a surname, and it reached America early. It became a given name for sons in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and then crossed to daughters in the nineteen-nineties, which is a common fate for surname-names ending in a soft syllable.
Meaning
the willow farm
Old Norse selja, 'willow', with by, 'farmstead, village' — the same by that ends Derby, Whitby and Grimsby, and one of the clearest markers of Scandinavian settlement on an English map. Selby in Yorkshire is recorded in that form. Shelby is a variant of the surname taken from it. The reading is documented.

The Winfred test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shelby's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Winfred climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Winfred's path sketches the road Shelby is walking now.
Shelby sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
