Sierrah is a Spanish word with a silent English letter added. A sierra is a saw, and by extension a range of mountains whose profile looks like one — the same metaphor that names Montserrat in Catalonia and the Sierra Nevada in two countries. The h at the end belongs to a different tradition entirely and does nothing at all.

Where it comes from

The story of Sierrah

Sierra became an American girls' name in the later twentieth century, along with a set of Western landscape words — Sierra, Savannah, Cheyenne, Dakota, Montana — chosen for their sound and their associations rather than for any family connection to the places. The h at the end came from a different direction: American spelling has long added a silent h to names ending in a vowel, on the model of Sarah, Hannah and Deborah, where the letter genuinely stands for something. Attached to a Spanish word it is purely decorative, and Spanish readers notice.

Meaning

a saw; a mountain range

Spanish sierra comes from Latin serra, a saw, and Spanish uses it for both the tool and the landform without any sense of metaphor — a sierra is simply what a jagged ridge is called. English borrowed the geographic sense with the American West and never took the tool. The word is also behind the English serrated. Nothing about the derivation is argued, and the h contributes nothing to it.

Sierrah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2001, with 81 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Sierrah went to 5 girls in 2025, but Sierra, Cierra and Ciera and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 559, which makes it the 483rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,459 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,875 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Sierrah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The word is familiar to every American and the sound is never in doubt.
  • It names a real landform and comes with a metaphor worth explaining.
  • Three open syllables sit well against a short or blunt surname.
What to consider
  • The h is silent and will be dropped by databases and by anyone writing from memory.
  • Sierra is the standard spelling by a wide margin and the correction will be made constantly.
  • Adding an English silent letter to a Spanish word reads as a mismatch to anyone who speaks the language.
