The story of Ciera
Car names circulate in a way few other words do: a model sold in the hundreds of thousands puts its name on every driveway and every advertisement for a decade. The Cutlass Ciera was among the most common cars on American roads in the 1980s, and the given name Ciera rose and fell inside almost exactly the same years, which is suggestive without being proof, since Ciara and Sierra were both rising at the same time for their own reasons. The Irish name underneath is genuine and old: ciar means dark, it gives the male Ciaran and the female Ciara, and St Ciara of Kilkeary is a seventh-century Irish saint with a feast day in January.

About 1 girl in 2,875 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Ciera itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Allene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ciera's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Allene climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Allene's path sketches the road Ciera is walking now.
Ciera sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
