Allene
Feminine · “noble”
Allene is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 8,762 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
French shortens everything. Latin tabula became table, populum became peuple, and Adeline became Aline — the unstressed middle syllable simply dropped out of the mouth over a few centuries. Most French names are shorter than the names they came from for exactly this reason.

The story of Allene
The sound change is called syncope and it is one of the main reasons French sounds the way it does: an unstressed vowel in the middle of a word is squeezed out, and after a few centuries nobody remembers it was there. Adeline gave Aline this way, and English speakers who met the shorter name had no idea it was a contraction at all. American records then did what they do, which is double a consonant and add a letter: Aline became Alline, Allene and Alene, all of them recorded in the same decades and all said much the same. The -ene ending was everywhere in American naming around the turn of the last century, and it dates the name precisely.

noble
Usually taken as a form of Aline, itself a French contraction of Adeline, from the Germanic element adal, noble. A second account treats it as a feminine built on Allen, whose root has never been settled. The first reading is the likelier and neither is proven.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
