Where it comes from

The story of Siera

The metaphor is so thoroughly naturalized that Spanish speakers do not hear it any more — a sierra is a mountain range and also the tool in the shed, and nobody thinks about the connection until it is pointed out. The naming of Sierra Leone is documented: a Portuguese explorer in the 1460s called the mountainous peninsula Serra Lyoa, and the usual explanation is the shape of the hills or the sound of thunder over them. The Spanish spelling detail matters more than it looks. In Spanish a single r between vowels is a tap and a double r is a roll, and they distinguish words — pero is but and perro is a dog. Siera with one r is not the Spanish word.

Meaning

a saw; a mountain range

Spanish sierra, from Latin serra, a saw. The mountain sense is a metaphor that became the ordinary word. The same Latin root gives English serrated. Siera is an American spelling with one r; Spanish requires two, since a single r between vowels is a light tap rather than a roll.

Siera sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 150 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Siera went to 7 girls in 2025, but Sierra, Cierra and Ciera and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 559, which makes it the 483rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,449 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 2,875 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Siera itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Spanish meaning with a vivid image behind it that anyone can check.
  • Three open syllables with a clear central stress.
  • It is an ordinary word in a living language rather than a coinage.
What to consider
  • Sierra with two r's is the correct Spanish spelling and much commoner in America.
  • The single r changes the word in Spanish, where the doubling is a real distinction.
  • It is also a car model, a mountain range and a country, so the associations are many.
