The story of Shyam
Sanskrit shyama covers a range from black through dark green to dark blue, and it is applied to rain clouds, to the sea and to skin. Krishna, whose name means black, is described in the texts as dark, and the standard iconographic solution is a deep blue, sometimes explained as the color of a monsoon cloud or of the infinite sky. The same convention applies to Rama and to Vishnu. Color vocabulary rarely maps between languages: Japanese ao covers blue and some greens, Welsh glas likewise, and ancient Greek had famous difficulty with blue, which is why Homer's sea is wine-dark. Shyama sits across a boundary English draws firmly, and the visual tradition resolved the ambiguity in one direction while the name kept both senses.
Meaning
Sanskrit shyama, dark or dark blue
Shyam is from Sanskrit shyama, meaning dark, black or dark blue, and is one of the commonest names of Krishna. The name Krishna itself means black or dark. The color word covers a range English divides between black and blue, which is why the iconography settled on blue. The American peak is 1986.

The Marck test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shyam's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marck climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marck's path sketches the road Shyam is walking now.
Shyam sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
