Shon
Masculine · “Hebrew Yochanan”
Shon is given to both — 5,172 boys and 358 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Irish has no letter j and no sound to put it to. When Irish speakers borrowed the Norman French Jean, they had to substitute, and the sound they reached for was sh. That is why Sean is spelled and said the way it is, and Shon is that substitution written back into English orthography a second time.

The story of Shon
Irish and English divide the consonant space differently, and the difference is what forces the substitution. English has both sh and the j of judge; Irish has sh and had no j at the time of borrowing. Faced with the French Jean, Irish speakers used the nearest sound available and got Seán. The same process gives Séamus for James and Seoirse for George. What happened next is that Irish speakers moving into English wrote their names in English letters, and Seán became Shaun, Shawn, Shon and Shaine, each an attempt at the sound. So the name has crossed the same boundary twice: once into Irish, where a sound had to be replaced, and once back into English, where a spelling had to be improvised. The result is that Shon and John, which look and sound entirely different, are the same name.
Meaning
Hebrew Yochanan, God is gracious
Shon is a phonetic respelling of Sean, the Irish form of John, borrowed from Norman French Jean, from Latin Iohannes, from Greek Ioannes, from Hebrew Yochanan, Yah is gracious. The chain is complete and every step is documented. The Irish spelling Sean uses an accent to mark the long vowel and s before a back vowel to represent the sh sound, neither of which an English reader can be expected to know. It peaks in 1971.

The Carlo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Shon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Carlo climbed just as high around 1923, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Carlo's path sketches the road Shon is walking now.
Shon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The spelling is unambiguous where the Irish original is not.
- One syllable, easy to say and to write.
- The line back to Hebrew is complete and documented.
- Sean and Shawn are both far more common.
- The Irish spelling carries a cultural weight the respelling does not.
- It is often assumed to be a shortened form of something longer.
