Where it comes from

The story of Shianne

A great many indigenous peoples are known in English by names their neighbors gave them, usually through French or Spanish intermediaries, and the names are frequently uncomplimentary. Cheyenne is Dakota for speakers of a foreign tongue. Sioux is a French shortening of an Ojibwe word often translated as snakes or enemies; the peoples in question are Dakota, Lakota and Nakota. Eskimo, whose derivation is argued, was applied from outside and is now largely replaced by Inuit and Yupik. Apache appears to be Zuni for enemy; their own name is Nde or Inde. Comanche is Ute for someone who wants to fight. Mohawk is an Algonquian term. The pattern is the same everywhere: the traders and soldiers who wrote the names down learned them from whoever they met first, which was rarely the people concerned.

Meaning

Dakota Sahiyena, of another language

Shianne is a respelling of Cheyenne, from Dakota Sahiyena, generally explained as speakers of an unintelligible tongue, from a root meaning red or foreign speech. The Cheyenne name for themselves is Tsitsistas. The tribal name gave the Wyoming city and then the American given name. The peak of this spelling is 1997.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Shianne went to 10 girls in 2025, but Shyanne is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 39, which makes it the 921st most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,536 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 41,212 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Shianne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
