Serjio
Masculine · “Latin Sergius”
Acts 13 has Paul meet a proconsul called Sergius Paulus on Cyprus, and it is the same chapter in which Saul begins to be called Paul. The old idea that he took the name from the official is almost certainly wrong, and the coincidence is what started it.

The story of Serjio
Luke writes in Acts 13 that Sergius Paulus, the proconsul of Cyprus, sent for Barnabas and Saul, and a few verses later refers to Saul, who is also called Paul, and uses Paul from then on. Because the two names appear in the same passage, a tradition going back to Jerome suggested that the apostle took the name from his distinguished convert. Modern scholarship almost universally rejects it. Roman citizens routinely had both a Jewish or Greek name and a Latin one, Paulus was an ordinary cognomen, and Luke's phrasing indicates that he already had it. What the passage records is the point at which a narrative aimed at a Greek and Roman readership switches to the name that readership would use. The Sergii themselves were an old patrician family with a claim of Trojan descent.

Serjio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gaspar climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gaspar's path sketches the road Serjio is walking now.
