Gaspar
Masculine
Gaspar is one of the three names tradition gives the magi, and unlike the other two it may point east rather than west. One serious line takes it from an Indo-Parthian king's name, which would make it the most genuinely eastern of the three.

The story of Gaspar
Matthew describes wise men from the east without naming them or saying how many; the three names — Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar — appear in Western tradition several centuries later, along with the number. Gaspar became an ordinary name across Spain, Portugal and Latin America, where the three kings are the ones who bring gifts at Epiphany rather than at Christmas. It reaches United States records with Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking families.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No derivation is established. The most-cited proposal connects the name to Gondophares, an Indo-Parthian king of the first century whose name in Persian means something like winner of glory; that would be an unusually apt source for a wise man from the east. A Persian reading as 'treasurer' has also been offered. The gospel of Matthew names no magi at all, so the whole set of names is later tradition.
Pronouncing Gaspar
gahs-PAR
Two syllables with the stress on the second in Spanish and Portuguese. English speakers say GAS-per, moving the stress forward and reducing the ending, which is the Caspar pattern.

The Morse test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gaspar's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Morse climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Morse's path sketches the road Gaspar is walking now.
Gaspar sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented place in one of the best-known Christian traditions.
- Six letters, no silent ones, and readable at first sight in English and Spanish.
- Ordinary across the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world rather than unusual there.
- Its meaning is genuinely unknown and the proposals are speculative.
- The stress falls differently in Spanish and English, so the child will hear two versions.
- The English trimming is an ordinary word for a sharp intake of breath.
