The story of Serge
The Romans called China Serica, the land of silk, and its people the Seres, and that is nearly all they knew. Silk arrived overland through a chain of intermediaries none of whom had seen both ends of the route, and Roman writers speculated that it grew on trees. The word serica went into Late Latin as a term for a silky cloth and then, degraded, into Old French as sarge for a much humbler twilled fabric, which is the serge of suits and school uniforms. So a word that once meant the most expensive material in the empire now names a hard-wearing worsted. The personal name shares nothing with it but four letters. Sergius belongs to the class of Roman family names that the Romans themselves could not explain, and the honest answer about its meaning is that there is none available. Serge peaks in the American data in 1972.
Meaningnot established
Roman family name Sergius, meaning unknown
Serge is the French form of Sergius, an old Roman gentilicial name of unknown derivation, quite possibly Etruscan like several other early Roman family names. The traditional gloss servant, from servus, is a folk explanation with no support. The name spread through Saint Sergius, a Roman officer martyred around 300, and became enormously popular in Russia through Saint Sergius of Radonezh. The fabric serge is a separate word entirely, from Latin serica, silk.

Serge's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jerone climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jerone's path sketches the road Serge is walking now.
