The story of Jerone
He worked from the Hebrew when the church wanted the Greek. The Greek translation of the Jewish scriptures had been in use for centuries and was regarded as inspired in its own right; the new Latin version was supposed to be made from it. He went back to the Hebrew instead, learned the language for the purpose, consulted rabbis, and produced a translation that differed from the received text in places that mattered. Augustine wrote to him worried that congregations would riot. They did, in at least one town, over a single word about a plant in the book of Jonah. The version he made was the standard Bible of the west for a thousand years.
Meaning
sacred name
Two Greek elements, one meaning holy or sacred and one meaning a name, and the reading is settled. The long Greek original was shortened in every European language it entered; the English form is already a heavy reduction of it, and this spelling shortens the ending further.
How the name formed
- A Greek compound meaning sacred name
- Shortened in Latin and again in every vernacular
- Jerome in English from the Middle Ages
- Jerone as an American spelling of the ending

Pronouncing Jerone
juh-ROHN
Two syllables with the stress at the back. The standard spelling ends in a silent e that lengthens the vowel; this one keeps the e and drops the m, which changes the last consonant and nothing else.

Fashion outlook
Jerone sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is unusual, specific and easy to explain.
- Jerry is available immediately and is thoroughly familiar.
- The stress at the back gives the name a firm shape.
- Jerome is the standard spelling and this will be corrected into it constantly.
- The changed consonant is audible, so the two are not simply variants.
- It is firmly of the early twentieth century in American records.
