Semira
Feminine · “Arabic samir”
Semiramis was a real woman. Shammuramat ruled Assyria as regent for her son around 811 to 806 BC, an extraordinary position for a woman in that state, and Greek writers turned her into a legendary queen who built Babylon and conquered half of Asia.

The story of Semira
Shammuramat appears in Assyrian inscriptions as the wife of Shamshi-Adad V and the mother of Adad-nirari III, and she is named alongside her son on monuments in a way no other Assyrian queen is, which is generally taken to mean she held real authority during his minority. The Greek tradition, working from garbled reports centuries later, made her Semiramis: founder of Babylon, builder of its walls and hanging gardens, conqueror of Egypt and India, and eventually a figure in Dante, Voltaire and Rossini. Almost none of that is historical. What survives underneath is a brief and unusual episode of a woman governing Assyria, which was startling enough at the time to be recorded and startling enough afterwards to grow into a legend that ran for two and a half thousand years.

Arabic samir, companion in evening conversation
Semira has two likely sources. One is Arabic Samira, the feminine of samir, one who converses in the evening, from samar, night-time talk. The other is Semiramis, the Greek form of the Assyrian name Shammuramat. Amharic and Eritrean usage of Semira is also documented. The record cannot separate them. The American peak is 2017.

The Kamrie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Semira's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kamrie climbed just as high around 1996, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kamrie's path sketches the road Semira is walking now.
