Where it comes from

The story of Seleste

Caelestis was a late-Latin name and a title — Dea Caelestis was the Roman name for the great goddess of Carthage — and it passed into Christian use through several early martyrs. French Céleste was ordinary from the Middle Ages, and Spanish Celeste is common in Latin America, where it also means sky blue. English has used Celeste since the nineteenth century. The Seleste spelling appears in American records from the 1980s, chiefly in Mexican-American families, and peaks in 2004; the change from c to s makes the pronunciation unambiguous for a Spanish reader, which is very likely why it was made.

Meaning

Heavenly, of the sky

From Latin caelestis, heavenly, from caelum, sky or heaven. The reading is settled. French made it Céleste and used it for both sexes; English took the feminine. The S- spelling is an American respelling that carries no separate history and is used chiefly in Spanish-speaking families, for whom c before e is an s sound anyway.

About 1 girl in 950 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 66,969 for Seleste itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and about as lovely as a meaning gets.
  • It is unambiguous for a Spanish reader in a way the c spelling is not.
  • Celeste stands behind it as the standard form.
What to consider
  • Celeste is the standard spelling everywhere and will be written instead.
  • The S- version reads as an error to anyone who knows the Latin.
  • Seleste, Celeste, Selest and Celest are all in the records.
