Where it comes from

The story of Katrine

The loch has an afterlife nobody expects. Glasgow in the nineteenth century was a city with cholera and no clean water, and the solution built for it was an aqueduct running some thirty miles from Loch Katrine through hills and under rivers, entirely by gravity, delivering water to the city without a single pump. It opened in the eighteen-fifties, it has been extended rather than replaced, and it still supplies the city. Meanwhile the name's other half, the Scandinavian Katrine, arrived with Danish and Norwegian families and is simply what Katherine is called there. Two unrelated words, one spelling, and an American record that cannot tell which household meant which.

Meaningnot established

Not established

As a form of Katherine, the name inherits a meaning nobody has established — the Greek original has never been explained and the familiar gloss of pure was attached to it centuries later. As a loch name it is a separate Gaelic word with its own disputed derivation. The two are unrelated and the spelling does not choose between them.

Katrine sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1981, with 27 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Katrine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a real form of a name understood everywhere, and a rare one in America.
  • The short forms are strong and sound nothing like each other.
  • The spelling is simple and read correctly on sight.
What to consider
  • Katrina and Catherine are both close and hers will be written as one of them.
  • The Scandinavian pronunciation has three syllables and the American has two.
  • The loch and the name are unrelated, whatever the resemblance suggests.
